Ian Silber, head of product design at OpenAI, discusses how AI is reshaping the design role, why designers feel uncertain, and how product design work is changing at a fast-moving, research-driven company. The conversation covers team composition, the blurring of PM, design and engineering roles, how to decide what to polish versus ship quickly, and designing ChatGPT for a very wide range of users.

01Key learnings

  • Designers are still early in adapting to AI; nobody has a settled design process, so starting to experiment today already gives you a meaningful lead.
  • Design work has not sped up as much as engineering because the process still requires messy iteration, trying and discarding ideas, and feedback loops.
  • Use AI tools across the whole design process, including dropping early ideas into a coding or agent tool to prototype and think them through.
  • Stay adaptable: capabilities change within months, so what failed last quarter may work now, and designers should revisit assumptions often.
  • Pick your battles: obsess over durable core experiences, while shipping quickly and building in public for fast-changing features where learning beats polish.
  • Build well-rounded design teams with complementary strengths (prototyping, visual, brand, strategy, systems thinking) rather than expecting one designer to do everything.
  • Think in systems and reusable building blocks, and default to doing less by extending existing components or features rather than designing new one-offs.
  • Design for a very broad spectrum of users, from novices to heavy power users, by keeping the default experience simple while exposing advanced capabilities to those who want them.
