Seth Godin, longtime marketer, author of 21 books and a daily blogger, and a former product manager at Spinnaker Software, joins Lenny Rachitsky to discuss taste and standards, brand promises in the AI era, and his new book This is Strategy. The conversation covers strategic choices about customers, competition, validation and distribution, the role of tension in strategy, systems thinking, and what makes a product remarkable enough to spread by word of mouth.
01Key learnings
- Define quality as meeting spec, and relentlessly improve the spec in service of the people you serve rather than polishing endlessly for yourself.
- Treat good taste as anticipating what people want just before they do, and build it by working alongside people with high standards.
- Treat brand as a promise: decide what you stand for, what you don't do, and what you'd be missed for, then make a difficult promise and keep it.
- AI will stop being a feature, like electricity. Ask what's in it for the user and build the product around a remarkable promise instead of the technology.
- Choose your customers deliberately and narrowly, since that choice shapes the product, the pressures you face, and the life you'll lead.
- Choose your competition, your validation source, and your distribution channel explicitly, because these choices quietly determine your future product and constraints.
- Build tension into a strategy by making a promise that might not work and then delivering on it; avoid mere stress, which just means being pulled two ways.
- Learn to see the systems you operate within, since invisible norms often explain why things feel scary or impossible, and decide whether to work with or change them.
