Austin Hay, head of marketing technology at Ramp and former VP of growth at mParticle, explains what MarTech is, how it fits into growth organizations, where the role should sit, and what tooling and hiring look like. The conversation also covers attribution challenges, probabilistic measurement, and his favorite frameworks and interview questions.

01Key learnings

  • MarTech treats the marketing systems and platforms, both third-party and first-party, as products, and centers on people and process as well as the tools themselves.
  • A dedicated systems or MarTech owner usually becomes necessary somewhere around 100 to 150 people, when a village approach to tools breaks down.
  • Pick tools to solve specific problems, and combine buying a tool for most of the solution with building the remaining custom layer on top.
  • Track UTM and ad-network parameters from day one, storing first and last touch on user profiles and events, so multi-touch attribution is possible later without rebuilding.
  • Design the data stack around a warehouse and a clear philosophy for when to move data out of a CDP versus from the warehouse via reverse ETL.
  • Watch contracts and pricing tiers early, since SaaS costs can scale badly; aim for cost per user to fall as the company grows.
  • Interview candidates on how they prepared and on how they would approach a marketing tech audit, to spot tool bias versus problem-first thinking.
  • As app attribution gets harder, learn probabilistic modeling and use geo or holdout tests, since deterministic tracking is no longer reliable.
