Jen Abel, co-founder of Jellyfish and GM of Enterprise Sales at State Affairs, walks Lenny Rachitsky through the full enterprise sales lifecycle step by step, using a SpaceX legal-team case study. The conversation covers outreach, intro and demo calls, pilots, pricing, procurement, and contract signing, and argues that the process is closer to 15 steps than the typical five.
01Key learnings
- Target only the executive decision-maker or their direct report (N minus one) using a 'pincer' approach, with the founder reaching the top and an AE reaching the N minus one contact.
- Lead outreach with the executive-level value, the alpha your product unlocks for their career and business unit, not just efficiency or an AI mandate; keep it to two or three sentences.
- Run the intro call as an informal one-on-one conversation: no demo, no slides, no recording, and let the buyer talk first to surface priorities and what must change.
- Use the intro call to qualify hard and disqualify early; roughly one in four calls may reveal the buyer isn't mature enough yet.
- Before the demo, schedule a short prep call with your champion to co-author the demo agenda, identify attendees, and add net-new stakeholders to bring them in.
- Demo only the narrow slice of the product (around 20 percent) that addresses the priorities you uncovered; avoid showing everything, which unravels your framing.
- Co-author pilot success criteria with the buyer, keep pilots to two or three days with three or four power users, and consider a charged, credited pilot for technical integrations.
- Expect enterprise win rates around 25 to 35 percent of qualified opportunities; a higher win rate suggests your price is too low, since buyers and the market talk.
