Michael Truell, co-founder and CEO of Anysphere (the company behind Cursor, the AI code editor), discusses Cursor's rapid growth to hundreds of millions in ARR. The conversation covers his vision for a 'world after code' where engineers specify intent at a higher level, the origin story including an abandoned mechanical-engineering pivot, the decision to build an IDE, custom models, defensibility, and hiring lessons.
01Key learnings
- Build the product you and your team actually use every day (dogfooding) so you never ship anything that isn't genuinely useful, which keeps expectations of AI capability realistic.
- When working with AI coding tools, chop tasks into small specify-generate-review loops rather than handing over one giant specification, which is where most people get burned.
- Spend time on side projects deliberately pushing AI to its limits to build a calibrated gut feeling for what current models can and cannot do.
- Don't assume a crowded market is closed; look for places where incumbents are not ambitious enough and where the capability ceiling remains very high.
- Custom models can be a product-quality advantage: pick narrow weaknesses of foundation models (like fast next-edit prediction) rather than trying to replicate them wholesale.
- Hire slowly and prioritize intellectual honesty, curiosity, and level-headedness; a two-day paid work-test project doubled as both assessment and recruiting tool.
- Expect real moats in AI to come from consistently being the best product and compounding R&D, since the capability ceiling is high enough that leapfrogging is always possible.
- Filter out most AI hype by focusing only on the few developments that materially affect your business, a habit that comes from experience with the field's history.
